An unexpected delight

For years I looked at photos and researched websites on keeping an art journal. I drooled over all the beautiful images and studied techniques and tips, but I never started one of my own. I was too afraid it wouldn’t live up to my standard of perfection. As I recently shared here, I just started my first art journal and I can tell this will likely be the first of many to come. I am having so much fun it’s insane. :) One of the hang-ups I originally had was not knowing what kind of notebook to use for an art journal. I read so much information it made my head spin. Some people suggested more pricey sketchbooks with hard covers. Others said to use anything, and glue several pages together to make them more sturdy. I was so overwhelmed that I didn’t know where to begin. Last year (or maybe it was earlier this year?) I attempted to start an art journal. I went through a regular composition notebook and ripped out half the pages, then glued lots of pages together, as instructed. I start...

faces1 Originally uploaded by hopewilbanks So I was practicing eyes, faces, and hair for my La Petit Doll class the other day and this is what I ended up with. It's frustrating when your vision doesn't match what comes out on paper, but I actually like a couple of these, so I'll keep trying. :)

Bad/good Originally uploaded by Artsy Hope Today's art journaling was simple and a nice end result. First I jotted down some thoughts: negative ones on the left side, positive on the right. I didn't like the negative thoughts, so I wanted to cover them up. I used my water soluble oil pastels and colored purple and teal shapes on the left, then smooshed them around on the page really good. Since my thoughts on the right side were more positive, I decided to create a sun and blue sky on that side. I used orange and yellow for the sun, then added some of the matching teal from the left side. As a final step, I squirted some white acrylic on both pages then used a credit card to spread the paint around. Voila! Something I am beginning to learn about using a b&w composition notebook is that I think I like gluing two pages together. The first couple of weeks I didn't glue any pages together. I did a lot of watercolor backgrounds, which bled through when the colors were dark. ...
